When Fenwick Island was incorporated in the 1950s, local sentiment demanded that the town not be overly developed. That sentiment has prevailed even today as the town remains a small community—the most recent census reveals it has a population of just 379 people—with a first-class beach, award-winning restaurants, and boasting a quiet way of life along the coast. The most luxurious of beach homes you'll find here are designed to take full advantage of the coastal beauty of the area with sprawling, oceanfront lots and astounding floorplans that accomodate large families or groups of guests looking to relax in this mid-Atlanic paradise. For the truly discerning homeowner, these Fenwick Island beach homes for sale provide bayfront swimming pools, Chef's kitchens, custom bathrooms, wrap-around balconies, bright sunrooms, and plenty of oversized windows to let in the maximum amount of light and seaside air. If you're looking for an escape, you can't do better than this.
Given the small size of this community, it shouldn't be surprising to find that many of the homes are priced to reflect that exclusivity, with multi-million dollar estates being quite common here. However, for a more modest $500,000 you can find so truly darling beach cottages in Fenwick Island real estate listings that are just blocks from the beach and include their own special set of luxury features like vaulted ceilings, skylights, and wrap-around decks with retractable awnings. These homes make for terrific hideaways or investment properties, but they could easily accomodate year round living. Popular communities in or around Fenwick Island include The Refuge at Dirickson Creek, Lighthouse Lakes, Bayside Fenwick Island, and King’s Grant.
The Good Life on Fenwick Island
Named for English settler Thomas Fenwick, Fenwick Island sits directly on the Transpeninsular Line and is most known for the historic Fenwick Island Lighthouse. Built in 1858, the lighthouse is 87 feet tall and is today meticulously maintained by a committed group of volunteers. The famed light sits almost directly on the Delaware-Maryland state line and is open for tours during certain times of the year. It is also the only lighthouse in coastal Delaware that today is accessible via land, as the lighthouses in the Rehoboth/Dewey area are either out on the Delaware Breakwater or located on a lightship.
One of the gems of this southern Delaware beach town is Fenwick Island State Park, which is a three-mile barrier island and is a great spot for relaxing and enjoying a quiet day in coastal Delaware. Boasting 344 acres of peaceful enjoyment, the park has one of the few areas in Delaware with a designated surfing area. You can also drive your vehicles on the beach with a surf fishing vehicle tag, allowing for a great day of fishing and relaxation.
There are dining options galore in Fenwick Island, including such popular spots as Harpoon Hannah’s, Catch 54, Papa Grande’s, Just Hooked and the Fenwick Crab House. In fact, there are dozens of excellent conveniences along the coastal highway, from banks to bathing suits, that make it easy to take care of your daily needs. But if you do feel like a little more excitement from time to time, Ocean City is literally just across the street waiting for you. This bustling city is a hotbed of activities and festivals that will keep you busy, from Sunfest and the Festival of Lights to the annual World Championship Wildfowl Carving Competition. In Fenwick Island real estate, you can have it all—peace, serenity, and excitement are all close at hand.
